Promise 1

Psalms 34:19: “Many are the difficulties of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.”

The righteous do sometimes seem to have more difficulties than others have, for God is polishing them as a rough diamond is polished, and we know that some rough diamonds need much more polishing than others do.

The Scriptures tell us that the afflictions of those who have voluntarily entered the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-7), and put their hands to the plough (Luke 9:62), “afterwards yield the peaceable fruits of righteousness unto them that are exercised thereby” (Hebrews 12:11).

When we thus put ourselves in God’s hands we must never look back at anything left behind, for nothing can compare with the joy of having Christ dwell with and in us. In a spiritual sense, and sometimes literally, we will then be delivered from all of our afflictions.

Are you afflicted, dear one,
From every avenue
Have patience, I have promised
That I will deliver you.
As a diamond is polished,
So its beauty will shine through,
Your trials are the means I take
To make you lovely, too.

Promise 2

John 16:33: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulations but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Overcoming the world is the most difficult thing we must do. As before stated, it isn’t usually the grosser sins that tempt the followers of Jesus, it is the subtle sins of the spirit, such as doubt, pride, selfishness and envy. Sometimes we are aware of these faults in ourselves, but often we are unconscious of their existence, so we must continually examine ourselves to see if we are unknowingly harboring any of these things.

We are not alone, however, for Jesus, our High Priest, was tempted in all points as we are, and He is always touched with the feeling of our infirmities (Hebrews 4:15). When we are downcast, He tells us to be of good cheer, that although we will have much tribulation, He has overcome the world, and will help us accomplish the same. We can be certain that if we follow the same course that Jesus followed, we will in His strength eventually attain the victory which He gained.

Since I have overcome the world,
I bring you words of cheer,
You can resist its blandishments,
If you will persevere.
And when you conquer in My name,
Your life will overflow
With deep and everlasting peace
That all who love me know.

Psalms 34:19: “Many are the difficulties of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.”

Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who arc the called according to His purpose.”

Here is a most comforting promise when our afflictions seem beyond us, and we cannot understand why such things should happen to us. In times like these, it is well to recall that ALL things work together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose. Who are the called according to His purpose, and are we in this class? The called are those who have voluntarily entered into the family of God, and they will remain in this relationship as long as they are faithful. And when the veil is lifted that covers our mortal eyes and we behold God as He really is, we will then understand and praise Him for His wonderful works to the children of men ( Psalms 107:8 ).

Child of God, disquieted
With earthly care and woe,
There always is a reason
Why you must suffer so.
And when this life is ended,
You will see and understand
That all the way He led you
Straight toward the Promised Land,

Psalms 41: I : “Blessed is hc that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.”

We should consider the poor, literally poor, or the poor in faith and love toward God. We must clothe and feed them if they need it, and “preach the word in season and out of season” (2nd Timothy 4:2) wherever we may go. We never know when the seed that we have sown will be watered by someone else (if not by us) and will in due time blossom forth in faith and obedience to God. The world is so full of trouble and suffering, we have it on every side. It is our privilege to go forth with love and a helping hand, and. “as we have opportunity, do good unto All men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). We repeat, we must preach the Word —Always, hut, many times, performing little acts of kindness will more effectively preach the Gospel and thus lay the foundation for the spoken and written word.

If we cast our bread upon the waters,
It will return to us some day,
For our God will deliver and bless us,
As we travel on life’s highway.
