The dogs and I were walking in the upper hayfield when suddenly a deer jumped the fence beside us and ran across our path She was so close I could have touched her and so fast that the dogs didn’t have time to react We all stood and watched while she rapidly disappeared into the trees at the other side of the field

We have many deer in this area and daily sightings are common We never tire of seeing these beautiful sleek creatures that grace our landscape because their fluid movements are a joy to watch The herd we are familiar with comes through at least twice a day Once in the morning, again at dusk and occasionally in-between We live on the pathway to their feeding grounds and they like to graze in our hayfields There is plenty there for us and them so they are welcome Sometimes the late evening sun highlights their healthy bodies and they almost seem to glow

They are far different from the deer I read about in the newspaper The Grand Canyon National Park is destroying a herd of deer that has been eating handouts from park visitors The deer are addicted to junk food and have lost their natural ability to digest their normal food of vegetation. They are in extremely bad health and are almost starving to death. They are so addicted to sugar and salt that they will go to great lengths to get them and have come to be terrible pests

Junk food is the crack cocaine of the deer world, according to one of the park managers.

This is a striking example of what happens when things don’t go as our Father intended The deer that eat the food that God provides are healthy and beautiful The deer that left the things of God and started indulging in temporary pleasures became sick, showed unnatural behavior and had to be put to death.

It is exactly the same for us. When we stay with the word of our Father and live on constant feedings of the Truth, we are spiritually healthy and beautiful in the sight of our Lord When we seek instant gratification, it is junk food that leads to death

“And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever” (I John 2.17)
