In a prayer to his heavenly Father the Lord Jesus uttered these words as recorded by John (17 3) This is life
eternal that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent” Here the Master outlines the blueprint for salvation namely that eternal life is predicated upon an intimate (that is  what the word know implies) knowledge of God and of his Son I or anyone then who desires to live forever in the Kingdom that God has promised to establish this knowledge of which the Lord Jesus speaks becomes of paramount importance far more important than all the combined wisdom and knowledge of the world God has said that the wisdom of this world is foolishness in his sight that is it pales into in significance when compared to his Omniscience On the other hand, the knowledge of God to really know him will bring salvation will bring the blessing of eternal fellowship and communion with the Great Creator and Sustainer of all.

How then is this knowledge acquired’ The obvious answer is through the media by which God has chosen to reveal him self to mankind The spoken and the written word are two of the methods that God used. But the spoken word can be forgotten and the written word can be misunderstood, and so through ages past, God has also manifested himself in visual, bodily form to emphasize and clarify his message to man.

Now his Word tells us that He (God) dwells in light unapproachable and full of glory; and further, that no man can see God and live. Because of this, he has chosen to present himself to mankind through representative persons. As an example, when God commissioned Moses to appeal to Pharaoh to let his people go out of Egypt, Moses at first objected because he was slow of speech. So God also selected Aaron to assist him and God told Moses (Exod. 4-16), “He shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.” In other words, God would manifest himself to Aaron and to the people, through Moses. Moses would represent the presence of God among them. Later this manifestation also came to the children of Israel through the angel of God’s presence. In Exodus 23-20 God warns them, “Behold, I send an angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of him and obey his voice, provoke him not, for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my Name is in him. In this instance the angel carried the very name of God, he was God’s representative to the people of Israel.

However, in the plan and purpose of God, something more was necessary. In addition to the manifestation of himself through law, through commandment and precept, God desired to complete this revelation of himself to mankind by exhibiting his moral characteristics in human form for all to see and to learn thereby. So, says the Apostle Paul in Gal. 4-4, “God sent forth his son, made of a woman, made under the law to redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons.” The apostle is speaking here of the Lord Jesus and of particular significance is the statement that Christ w as made of woman, made under the law; but having no human father being the son of God. Matthew explains this further ( Matl. 1-18) in recording the details of Christ’s birth as told to Joseph by an angel, ‘Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a son. and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is. God with in.

Jesus then became a further manifestation of God to men that they might know him and so be saved. Not that Jesus was god, any more than Moses was, or that the angel in the wilderness was; but that he (Jesus) bore the Name of God (God being his Father) and represented God and his character on earth.

At one time Moses had requested God to show him his glory. God complied with this request and said, “I will make all my goodness pass before thee.- The description of this goodness is given in Exodus 34-6, “And the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long suffering and abundant in goodness and truth.” The moral character of God His Glory) was described here by the spoken word but it was not until the Lord Jesus appeared on the scene, that this aspect of God was visibly portrayed. When men looked on Jesus the could see the manifestation of the Goodness of God. That is why Jesus said to his followers, John 14-7, “If ye had know n me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that bath seen me hath seen the Father.” It is evident from the context of this chapter in John that Jesus was not asserting that he was the Father, but rather that he was a complete manifestation of the Father to men The Apostle Paul was to write later to the Hebrews that God revealed himself through his son. Jesus, who was the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person. Having said that, the- apostle is careful to add that Jesus was in fact a man and not the Eternal God In Hebrews 2-14 he makes this very clear, “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he (Jesus) also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that hath the power of death, that is the devil .   . For verily
he took not on him the nature of angels, but he took on him the seed of ‘Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people…

From the foregoing it is evident that Jesus was a unique member of the human family, made of a woman, of like passions as other men, tempted in all points like unto his brethren, yet WITHOUT SIN. (Heb. 4-15 ) He never once yielded to the desires of the flesh, but always did those things that pleased his Father, declaring the Father’s righteousness, demonstrating the Father’s love to man and manifesting the Father’s character; that through Jesus men might come to know and love God and therein find the eternal blessing of peace and life.

In Nazareth Revisited, Bro. R. Roberts gives the following succinct summation of the indwelling of the Father in the Lord Jesus P. 428) “The divine origin of Christ, as expounded in the writings of the prophets and the apostles supplies an explanation of every phase in which the gospel narratives exhibit the Lord Jesus Christ, and every utterance that came out of his mouth. They give the key that is beyond the reach alike of those who consider him to have been a mere man, and those whose theology compels them to describe him as eternal God. They account to us for what appear otherwise to be contradictions. They ex plain to us why in a man, the deportment of God is visible; why in sinful flesh, a sinless character was evolved; why in the impotent seed of Abraham, the power of Abraham’s God should be shown; why a man born as a babe in Bethlehem should speak of having come down from heaven; why a man not forty years of age should speak as though he had been contemporary with Abraham; why a man should at once be David’s son and David’s Lord; why a man of our own flesh and blood should assume the authority that belongs to God only, saying, “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well, for so I am-; why of a man it should be said that the world was made by him, that he dwelt in the bosom of the Father, and that he was the image of the invisible God, by whom and for whom all things had been created.

They explain to us, at the same time, why such a man should say, “Of mine own self I can do nothing-: -My Father is greater than “I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love-: -My God why hast thou forsaken me?” They show us that there is only one God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; and that whatever in Christ’s sayings seemed to indicate another God, was referable to the Father in him, whose Son, and medium, and power he was; and in no way inconsistent with the fact that Jesus was but His Son, in loving submission to all His commandments.” (unquote)

The life of Jesus and his triumph over sin is an inspiring example for all to follow and his actions amply justify’ the prophetic title given hundreds of years before his birth . . He shall be called Emmanuel . .. God with us … the wisdom and power and fiat of the Father became incorporate in a man of the house of David, that sin might be taken away and the way opened for friendship, love and life for evermore.
