The whole family was laughing at the sight of our two cats running around the room, up and down the stairs, and in and out of their kitty condo. They were moving at top speed, just a blur as they played tag with each other.
We went for years without having any cats. We weren’t “cat people,” we were “dog people.” That’s what we thought until two hungry stray cats adopted us for their very own. Miss Kitty and Tabby are now as much a part of our household as the dogs. We enjoy them and can hardly remember what it was like before we had cats to enliven our days.
It is interesting to see how different they are. Tabby is shy and quiet. Miss Kitty is outgoing and vocal. Tabby is long, thin and striped. Miss Kitty is short, plump and calico. One of the biggest differences is that Tabby is content with her life and the restless Miss Kitty wants to push it. Tabby has seen life in the outside world and didn’t care for it. She is pleased to have shelter, food and love. She has everything she needs and she knows it. Miss Kitty, however, is always seeking something else. She is seldom perfectly contented. Any closed door makes her unhappy. If she is in one room, she wants to be in another one. We have to be on our guard when opening outside doors or she runs out. We don’t want her out. We decided long ago our cats would be indoor cats. The outside holds too many serious dangers, such as traffic (we have recently seen two cats on our road killed by cars), aggressive dogs, malicious strangers and many more. There are health considerations also. If they are inside all the time, they don’t get fleas, ringworm, ear mites and diseases from stray cats.
Watching Miss Kitty makes me think of our human nature. We may have everything we need, as promised by our Heavenly Father, but we always push for a little more. When we get more, it is usually dangerous or at least unprofitable. We need to be grateful for all our Father bestows on us and be content. We have His promises, His Word, His Son, shelter, food and love. We have all we need.
Hebrews 13:5: “Be content with what you have; because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'”
