Several days ago I was listening to Loretta Lynn records at my parents’ house. First they would sing Amazing Grace; then they would sing an equally amazing song on’ its all your fault that I’m stepping out with your husband. Loretta Lynn makes the common mistake of trying to have one foot in this life, and one foot in the next life.
Being double minded is a common spiritual ailment. Reuben is called unstable as water in Gen. 49:3-4. Water takes the shape of the container it is put into. Reuben bent his personality to fit the crowd he was with. James says, “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” (ch. 1:8) Thus we see that this sin has been with us for a long time.
On the surface it appears that the cause of being double minded is a desire to have everyone as a friend. What we should realize is if we really love people of low standards, we would not compromise so that we may draw these people to God by our example. When we stoop to their level, we do them no favor; we just let them remain spiritually dead. Thus our lowering of standards does not show love of others; but love of flesh, and love of death which comes from flesh.
Jesus said, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” If an ox resists the yoke, it would hurt him. Thus people who are double minded do not taste the joy of being in the Truth.
To increase our zeal, and remove our double mindedness, it may help to study prophecy. This is because the more we know about the Kingdom, the more we will want it for ourselves.
Another thing that will help us not be double minded is to become aware of God’s presence as much as possible.
This sin is grave enough to keep us out of the Kingdom, so we must be aware of it.
