There is no question but what the priests and elders were not going to submit to God by conceding that Jesus was the Messias that was to come how the Jews have suffered these many centuries because of their commitment His blood be on us, and on our children Matt 27:25
The Jews were ever insistent that Jesus must be crucified to prose to the multitude that he was an imposter and had deceived them Only by crucifixion would their charge be fully justified that Jesus was an imposter John provides the best record When Pilate therefore heard that (their) saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Judgement hall, and saith unto Jesus, whence art thou? But Jesus gave no answer Then saith Pilate unto him, speakest thou not unto me? Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, except it were given thee from above therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him but the Jews cried out, saying, if thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar s friend, whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgement seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabatha And it was the preparation of the passover (feast) and about the sixth hour, and he (Pilate) saith unto the Jews, Behold your King’ But they cried out, away with him, crucify him
Pilate saith unto them, shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, we have no king but Ceasar Then delivered he him (Jesus) therefore unto them to be crucified And they took Jesus, and led him away John 19 8-16
The apostle John was present and bare witness to this point—the scene became so pitiful that John would not, or could not, bring himself to record the awful scene of Jesus falling down under the load of the cross, therefore it is good to include here the record of Mark And they (soldiers) compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear the cross. (Most likely Simon had offered words of accusation at the soldiers and that is why they selected him). And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, the place of the skull. And they gave him (Jesus) to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not. And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.” Mark 15:21-25.
“And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.” Luke 23:32-33.
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John all mention the title that Pilate placed on the cross, which proves that all the gospels are witness that Jesus was King of the Jews. John’s record is best, so here it is: “And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, the King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.” There is no doubt but what Pilate was much annoyed by the Jews for they had forced him to crucify Jesus when he felt that Jesus was innocent of any wrongdoing. The Jews, he felt, had outwitted him, but back of all the procedure was God’s plan. It must be carried out with perfect procedure. The Jews fully intended that Christ be crucified as an imposter or deceiver and not that he was the King of the Jews. David puts it thus: “For they persecute him whom thou (God) hast smitten.” Psm. 69:26.
