It is a fundamental of true Christian Faith that the Christ is to be anointed King and that he is also, even now, an anointed Priest. Jesus our High Priest at the Father’s right hand is one day to be our King ruling in Jerusalem.
In how many places does the Old Testament foreshadow this important two-fold aspect of the purpose of God in Christ?
One thinks immediately of Melchizedek, the priest-king in Jerusalem (Gen. 14) and of the prophecy in Ps. 110 which links the Messiah with him.
There is the prophecy of Joshua (i.e. Jesus) the High Priest who is to be “a priest upon his throne” (Zech. 6:13).
There are yet plenty more. How many readers have noticed this one ? Ezekiel 21 :26,27 foretells the overthrow of the Kingdom of Israel —Judah “until he come whose right it is”. Whose right what is? The antecedent is to found in the phrases : “Remove the mitre, and take off the crown”. The symbols of both priestly and kingly authority were to disappear until One shall come who shall combine both offices in his own person!
How many such prophecies of the coming priest-king can readers trace for themselves ? The present writer has a list of fifteen more, all in the Old Testament.
