Duth America

The Scots had considerable influence on the commercial development of Latin America during the last century and so it is not surprising that the Good News would have been carried there by Scots brethren The first evangelist was a brother Cameron, who emigrated to the city of Callao in Peru He did a little distribution literature and preaching in Panama on the way out, and on his arrival spread the gospel at every opportunity

Various other brethren settled later in different places on the vast continent, and preaching was carried out particularly in the Argentine and Brazil An English speaking ecclesia was founded in Buenos Aires through the efforts of a brother McAuslane, and built up further when brother Hepburn arrived He was learning Spanish with a view to extending the work when depression hit the country, and in 1891 he moved to Santos in Brazil Here he promptly began to learn Portuguese he obtained a supply of Bibles from brother Roberts and began systematic preaching and distribution of literature in the city But his solitary sojourn was unfruitful, and he moved on to Barbados in search of further opportunities We have seen how they were provided for him there

There is a small s Wage in the interior of Brazil called Santa Barbara A brother lived here with his family, but died in 1894 leaving his widow with four children care for, and no resources She wrote plaintively to sister Roberts in 1897, saying that her elder daughter wished to be baptized, -and that there was no brother to inform the service Might she do this herself ? Then she adds Why don’t christadelphians send out missionaries? They ask me, and I cannot tell, because do not know 0 that God would send someone! I will pray for it Sister Roberts reply pointed pointed out (what may well at that time have been true) that we were a small and poor people with limited means at our disposal But she added “But every Christadelphian is a missionary In this way the Truth is spreading all around the world”

Today our means are greater May we still say, “Every Christadelphian is a missionary?”
