‘Tis not in man to guide his steps
Mans’ thoughts are mostly vain.
The statutes of God’s measurements
They strive not to attain.
Their inborn ways are ways of pride
Their thoughts of honour great.
Left to himself his one desire
Is trained to hold estate.

But those whose conscience cleaves to thee
Who read thy honoured word,
Will seek the cleansing of their soul
But not in anger Lord.
The purging with the hyssop too
Creating a clean heart,
Is not despised by those who seek
Thy wisdom to impart.

Thine own beloved Son O God
Though free from sin’s dark stain,
Was cleansed by water and by blood
He shared the sinners’ shame.
He knew the chastening hand was love
None other loved so well;
He passed through his Gethsemane
The scriptures to fulfill.

Cleanse us O God in thine own way
And wash us by thy word.
Then sanctified and meet for Thee
We wait our absent Lord.
With unity of love and faith
A body well supplied,
A three fold cord made strong through prayer
Thine honour glorified.
