One wants to have houses, modern and new
but needs to build spiritually, sound and true.
One wants to have clothes, many and bright
but needs to be covered with linen of white.
One wants to drive cars, shiny and fast
but needs to walk firmly the spiritual path.

One wants to have food abundant and fresh
but needs to eat words of godly depth
One wants to have happiness and worldly wealth
but needs to have plenty of heavenly health
Our biggest test to overcome greed
is knowing the difference between want and need

Many times we see not the road
because of the burden and self-imposed load
We power along in our pursuit of success,
but move not an inch and cause only stress.
Our striving for better becomes our sole aim
instead of reaching for righteous gain.

Not just measured by ill gain got,
but also possessed by self-worth thought,
The road we challenge becomes unbeaten,
and our linen clothes, moth eaten.
The fruits of the spirit are not consumed
our sword of the spirit, unsharpened unhoned

In striving along, let’s not lose our sight
of godly needs and spiritual light.
We want to know which way to proceed;
thank God He knows the way we need
For left to man the one true way
is clouded from view by greedy sway

For all these “wants” become simply dross
when willing to sacrifice at whatever cost.
To put on a crown, an incorruptible prize,
let true needs become frontlets to our eyes.
Then well gird up our loins with purpose strong,
and receive the crown with the glorious throng.
