“. . . The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose” (Genesis 6:2). In order to understand this passage, we will search the Scriptures so that we can obtain a clear and decisive knowledge as to who these parties are. Let us first turn our attention to the sons of God. In Genesis 4:26 we are told that after Enos was born “. . . then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.” The margin states, “to call themselves by the name of the Lord.” The sons of God were those who had faith in the things preached by Enoch, Noah and the rest of the prophets. Since Christ came “. . . as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). Paul says: “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3: 26,27. Galatians 4:6 reads: “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” John states: “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the Sons of God; . . Beloved, now are we the sons of God . . .”(1 John 3: 1,2). These passages leave no doubt as to who the sons of God are.
Who are the daughters of men?” . . . They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God . . .” (Romans 9:8). And in Ephesians 2:3 we find: Those “fulfilling the desires of the flesh . . . are the children of wrath . . Abraham’s command to his servant was “thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites . . .” (Genesis 24:3). ‘And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me” (Genesis 27:46). Nehemiah made the Israelites swear by God: “. . . Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons (Ashdod, Ammon and Moab), nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves” (Nehemiah 13: 25). Nehemiah reminds them that even Solomon’s strange woman caused him to sin. And in 1 Kings 11:4-8 we are told how his wives turned away his heart. For Solomon built places to worship for all his strange wives, and he himself worshipped false gods. These strange women were the daughters of men.
These things were written for our learning (Romans 15:4), and to bring to our attention the admonition given in 2nd Corinthians 6:14-18: “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers . .. Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And I will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
