The answer is “No,” despite the common belief that man has an immortal soul that knows more after death than before. Here are some facts we can easily commit to memory. The Bible states-
- Man’s thoughts perish the day he dies . . . Psa. 146:3.
- The dead cannot praise God . . . Isa. 38:18.
- The dead cannot remember God. . . Psalm 6:5.
- The dead know not anything . . . Eccl. 9:5-6.
Have you been told that only the body dies, but not the soul ? Then consider these facts concerning the original Hebrew word Nephesh (translated soul 754 times) and the Greek word Psyche (translated soul 106 times).
- In both cases, almost 90 per cent of the time, the soul is said to be either subject to death, in danger of death, or delivered from death.
- The soul is never referred to, or spoken of in the Bible, as being an “immortal soul.”
Don’t you think the above fact are impressive ? Now add to then the facts that death is referred to in the Bible as a “sleep,” I Thess 4:13-16, and that unless we rise from the dead at the resurrection we are without hope (I Cor. 15:16 23).
You may be of the opinion that it doesn’t matter whether we believe these Bible facts or man’s teaching that the soul does not die. Eve believed the serpent (Gen. 3) instead of God’s word and the result was disastrous. To say the soul is conscious in death is to believe the serpent’s lie, “thou shalt not surely die”, and the result will be just as disastrous for all who so believe.
