The brethren and sisters in Southern California will be keenly interested in the announcement that a debate has been arranged between Mr. G. Dudley Stout, of the Christian (Campbellite) church and Brother Richard Stone assistant editor of the Tidings. The debate is to be held at 6421 Gifford avenue, the regular meeting place of the Los Angeles ecclesia and is under their sponsorship. The following schedule will be carried out (God willing).
General subject: “The Kingdom of God.”
On August 8th and 9th, (Thursday and Friday evenings) Mr. Stout will affirm “ The scriptures teach that the kingdom of God was established on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, when Jesus began to reign in heaven on David’s throne.” Brother Stone will deny.
On August 15th and 16th, (also on Thursday and Friday evenings) Brother Stone will affirm, “The scriptures teach that the Kingdom of God will be established on the earth at the coming of Jesus Christ, when he will begin to reign on earth on David’s throne.” Mr. Stout will deny. All sessions will begin at 8:00 p. m.
It is pleasing to see brethren who are capable and willing to defend the truth and we feel sure that our brother will show himself a capable workman, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Previous debates have been somewhat disappointing, especially in the attitude that the opposition have consistently taken, by abusing and accusing our brethren of many things that have no bearing on the issues at hand. If the proposed four evenings are satisfactory to all concerned, the nature of man will be discussed in future sessions. May God strengthen our brother’s hands, and may we each one support him with our presence whenever at all possible..
