Anything As Well ordered and perfectly created as is our earth and universe must have a Maker, a Master Designer Anything so orderly, so perfect, so precisely balanced, so majestic as this creation can only be the product of a Divine idea. There must be a Maker; there can be no other way. Dr Wernher von Braun.
Dr. von Braun is commenting on a phenomenon that, according to the Psalmist, is obvious: The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork. Romans adds that the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen. Modern science now understands many more of these invisible things, such as the arrangements of atoms and molecules, like DNA, on the small scale, to black holes in space and an expanding universe on the large scale.
As Dr. von Braun observes, simple logic tells him that there had to be a creator for everything to be so precisely balanced, so majestic; there just had to be a creator with a divine idea. Yet there is not only reluctance, but also a sense of repugnance, among many in the scientific community toward accepting this idea. One atheistic scientist has confessed that he believes in evolution as opposed to creation, not because it is reasonable or can be explained, but because the alternative is the admission of a creator, which he does not accept.
This scientist is not alone; it is absolutely amazing how many seemingly intelligent people work so hard trying to believe that nothing plus nobody equals everything. Not only is it illogical, it is unscientific.
There is a strong motivation for believing in evolution. If we made ourselves or somehow came into existence by mindless chance, then there is no one who has any right to tell us what to believe or how to live.
Now either there is a God or there is not. If there is no God, then we do not have to bother with what He allegedly said. Evolutionists, who deny the existence of an Almighty Creator, hold this position. But what if there is a God? If there is a God, either He has spoken, or He has not spoken.
If there is a God who has not spoken, there is nothing to listen to as agnostics would claim. They think that maybe there is a God, but if He has remained silent, we are still free to please ourselves.
But what if there is a God and what if He has spoken? Does it seem reasonable to refuse to listen to what He said?
In our time, as in no other time, it is considered fashionable to reject religion and the concept of God. Paul rightly assessed worldly wisdom when he said, “Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world…For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” God often takes the wise in their own craftiness by making an example of projects that seem impressive to men. The Tower of Babel failed to unite mankind, world dominions disintegrated such as the Greek and Roman empires, and in recent times the Titanic, that “unsinkable ship,” sank, the tallest towers in the world fell, space shuttles exploded, major corporations collapsed. The lesson is clear: man is not in control of his own destiny.
The Lord Jesus Christ found comfort in God’s handling of those who imagined themselves so much smarter than everyone else: “In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, 0 Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.”
Let us not be willingly ignorant of the origin of our world. Let us follow the advice Paul gave the Athenians when, after he told them about the “God that made the world and all things therein,” warned that God “now commandeth all men everywhere to repent; because he bath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness.” May we in that day be found among those who are patiently continuing in well doing, seeking for glory, honour and immortality, and may we be granted the gift of eternal life.
