Since we are instructed and expected to discern in matters pertaining to this life (I Cor. 6:5), we must educate ourselves in the wisdom of scripture and appoint brethren who can make wise decisions — those who know “with what judgment they judge, they shall be judged” (Matt. 7:1-3). Wise elders will always remember the “Hidden things of darkness” will be made manifest when the Lord comes — for he is the true judge ( I Cor. 4:5). They will be careful in making judgment, and will watch their own attitude in evaluating problems.
While all of us should be growing in wisdom, brethren of good report, known for their faith and compassion may qualify for the position of ecclesial leadership.
When serious matters are brought before the brethren, they will be found listening and speaking discreetly. In Bro. A. Crawford’s book, Proverbs, vol. 2 pg. 193, he advises: “Wisdom does not seal up the lips, but governs them so that a person can always seek wisdom — in times of need — from a discerning person. Should you consult him about matters that do not come within the compass of his talents, even then he will demonstrate his wisdom, for it is the part of a wise man to not deal with things too high for him”
(Prov 10:13)
