“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Mt. 7:7).
While this passage has always been my favorite verse, I never truly understood what it meant until following its instructions with the innocence of a child.
Trouble evokes a promise
At a time in my life when I needed –really needed God’s help, I reached out to Him in prayer promising that if my family was relieved of its burdens, I would seek to understand more about His word.
A move for the good
Within a week, our lives started on the way to dramatic change. We moved to a new state, a move that turned out to be a wonderful one in many ways. But the most important advantage of the move was that we settled in a neighborhood where I could do a lot of searching for Bible truth.
Next door, across the street and it seemed all around I was surrounded by people who were anxious to share their religious ideas. Even while moving in, I was approached by a lovely Lutheran woman. Days later, she introduced me to her friend who was enthusiastic about her church, which was an Assembly-of-God type.
When they found out that I was searching for a church, they were both ready with directions to their places and offers to help me break into the group.
Seeing a quiet light
Then there was Kathy. Kathy is a Christadelphian and lived several houses away. Our sons were the same age so our families became acquainted. She seemed a soft and gentle person. I was brash compared to her. At that time, I was worldly in many of my ways and she was sincerely different in her manner.
I had lots of questions for her. Looking back now, some of them were pretty ignorant but Kathy never treated them as such. She led me to my dusty Bible and a wonderful growing process began.
As I began to see what the Bible was really saying, I was challenged and humbled. But more than anything, I was blessed.
God does open His door
Throughout this experience I hope I’ve come to understand what Matt. 7:7 really means. If one asks, with proper respect toward God, and then seeks diligently for understanding, it will be given. One will find the truth. By our asking and seeking, we are knocking and God hears the knock and graciously opens His door.
