Our first promise is found in 1st Peter 5:7: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
Some of us do seem to be burdened with many cares, and they keep us from our real blessedness in Christ because we seem to be carrying them continuously, and trying to overcome them in our own feeble strength. The Scriptures tell us to cast our cares upon God, for he cares for us. So we are not alone, for God cares for us always. He is much closer to us than even the dearest human being could ever be. He knows our every thought, our every word, our every movement, and it must grieve Him when He sees us staggering underneath a load of care when He told us to cast our cares upon Him. That does not mean that we should not endeavor to help ourselves, for God works through His children to help His other children. But after we have done all we possibly can do, then “let patience have her perfect work . . . that ye may be wanting nothing” (James 1:4). We all need to learn patience. It is the hardest thing in the world to be obliged to wait for something. If we could just “get in there” and do something, how much better we would feel ! But if we will quietly wait and fix our minds on God instead of on our troubles, and let God have His way with us, patience will have her perfect work, and we will be wanting nothing as this Scripture tells us. We must have faith in Him that when we put our cares in His hands, He will handle them for us, and there will never be any mistakes made.
Our second promise is found in Revelation 3:20: “Behold I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”
Our hearts should be filled with gladness to have our Lord come in and sup with us. But we must first open the door before He can come in. Like any other visitor. He first knocks. If we don’t let Him in, He will, of course, go away, and we will miss having him as our visitor. But, unlike other visitors, if we let Him in, He will always be with us, we can cast our cares upon Him, and He will care for us, Always.
We can have that comfort now and not wait until Jesus comes. If His spirit dwells within us, and He sups with us, He will be a part of the family, Head of the house, and when He leaves He will take us with Him. Let us not keep Him knocking any longer, let us open the door and let Him in.
